TEF CANADA – TEST D’EVALUATION DE FRANÇAIS POUR LE CANADA
The test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada (TEF Canada) is a test of general French which assesses the level of proficiency in French of native and non-native French speakers alike.
The TEF Canada is recognized as an official proof of language proficiency by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residency applications and Canadian citizenship applications.
The Canadian government also accepts TEF CANADA for several Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), start-up visa programs, and applying under self-employed immigration programs.
The TEF Canada Exam Format for Canadian Immigration Application (PR) :
It consists of 4 modules: listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing.
- Compréhension écrite (reading): 60 minutes – 50 questions – 300 points
- Compréhension orale (listening): 40 minutes – 60 questions – 360 points
- Expression écrite (writing): 60 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points
- Expression orale (speaking): 15 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points
Total Points = 1560 points
Total Time Duration = 2 hours 55 minutes
The TEF Canada Exam Format for Canadian Citizenship Application:
It consists of only 2 modules: listening and speaking
- Compréhension orale (listening): 40 minutes – 60 questions – 360 points
- Expression orale (speaking): 15 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points
Total Points = 810 points
Important Announcement:
All tests must be completed on the same day for your certificate to be recognized by Canadian authorities.
TEF Exam Results
An official certificate of results will be delivered to each candidate. Each certificate is very detailed and personalized. The certificate will show the score obtained in each module. It will also mention the level of proficiency reached as well as a commentary of the skills in general French.
The results will be sent 4 to 6 weeks after the exam date by email and postal mail for TEF et eTEF
TEF Certificate Validity:
The certificate of results is valid for two years.
Repeat the Exam
Candidates may take the test as many times as they want, but maintain a gap of a minimum of 60 days between two exam sessions.
The TEF Canada is available in two versions:
TEF and electronic-TEF
- e-TEF Canada is a computer-based version of the reading, listening, and writing modules.
- Basic computer skills are required for the e-TEF Canada (use of a mouse).
Level of proficiency
The TEF Canada evaluates the candidate’s French language proficiency using a 7 NCLC level scale which is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).
